The technologies I art with now didn't exist when I finished up in 2002, at SMFA, Boston. I showed lithographs, sound installation, sculpture, egg tempera paintings on digital still images, and hand-altered 16mm film in my MFA thesis.
I began showing digital video-based work in Pittsburgh in 2005, doing live projection work with bands and choreographers in 2006. Six Gallery Press published my first book of poetry, Spiritual Side Effects, in 2008. My digital experimental short films have screened internationally since 2012 and in 2014, I began working in Processing and other code-based creative methods. I moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in late 2015, after living in Chicago for five years.
All of this is my art life, my second life.
Growing up, I got an A++ art history education visiting museums. Judy Chicago, Remidios Varo, Georgia O'Keefe, Robert Mapplethorpe, Faith Ringgold, Bruce Naumann, Jacob Lawrence, William Blake, Paul Klee, Mario Merz, Ana Mendieta, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Rothko, Kahlo, Kentridge, LeWitt, Bochner . . . . I was also a violinist. At 17, I started in a conservatory of music. At 19-20, catastrophic medical malpractice stopped me. Malpractice created a six-month experience that Baudelaire - no, Rimbaud - would call the "prolonged derangement of the senses". I came out of it separated from language, unable to hold a pencil, or a violin bow.
At twenty I began daily zen meditation practice. I studied the anthropology of religion, read political philosophy, wrote poetry. I explored rural churches where the Cults of Mary, the Holy Spirit, and eschatology are embraced. I learned more about Native American tribal histories in Wisconsin.
I went to college, in a 2-year UW school. There I met other non-traditional college students. Many were paying for school with the GI bill. Some struggled through undiagnosable illnesses and PTSD after coming home from serving in the Gulf.
Zen became Thich Nhat Hanh's mindfulness. Then Tibetan Tonglen. Then I returned to Zen. Some days, I pray rosaries.
I live and work "embedded in the audience". I have worked with the general public in museum education, in digital retail, in media production, as a tutor and teacher.
I provide audiences with variable experiences. The Buddhist description of pratityasamutpada nails how this art 'assembles'. Interdependant co-arising is a great English phrase for it. Umberto Eco would call it 'open work' - the art completes with audience relationship. Burroughs and the cutups are very important to me, and I'll let you browse the list of where things have shown, if you want to. . .
